Описание к видео Nature’s wonderous tree dweller and rhythmic sound-keeper: The Himalayan Cicada

A cicada, belonging to the superfamily Cicadoidea and the order Hemiptera, rests quietly on the earthy ground, surrounded by patches of small green grass. Known for their distinctive calls and remarkable life cycles, cicadas are true bugs characterized by clear wings, prominent eyes, and sturdy bodies. While this individual remains still on the mud, cicadas typically emerge seasonally after spending years underground as nymphs. Their presence plays an important ecological role, contributing to soil aeration and serving as food for various predators. This grounded moment offers a close look at a species often heard but rarely observed so closely.

We may have all heard the chitter of Cicadas in a forest in the evenings or early mornings and seen dragonflies and damselflies hovering near water but how often have you seen these insects up close?

Cicadas suck the sap of trees they live on. A Hill Barbet calls as this Cicada slowly clawls up an akhrot or walnut tree. The green colouration roughly matches the mosses on the tree trunk, giving it near perfect camouflage.

In a rather rare and surprising sighting, a Cicada is seen at our Wilderness Films India forest in Motidhar, Uttarakhand. The insect is spotted on an old walnut tree trunk with a heavy growth of mosses and lichen. You can see the abdomen contract and retract as the call is made, and the chirruping sound gets modulated with the extension and retraction of the abdominal tip.

Notice the movement of the abdominal region of the Cicada.
