In the grey-bearded past, when the sun that lit the world was not the same as now, and the land was ruled by bitter cold, heavy clouds descended from the heavens. From them were born the glaciers — silent, mighty giants of crystal and frost. Slowly they moved, groaning and grinding, down from the high mountains, covering the earth like the ancient linens of a royal bed. In their icy embrace, the land trembled, and where they passed, they left eternal traces.
Many winters and summers passed. And then came the time when these giants of ice began to melt, as though they were the weeping tears of ancient gods bidding farewell to the world. Where the glacier retreated, the land was strewn with boulders — silent sentinels — and mounds of shattered stone. Between them, valleys were carved, shaped by the floodwaters freed from icy bondage.
Thus, beneath the northern sky, in the land we now call Estonia, the valleys were born — like the deep-set lines on the face of Mother Earth, like footprints of the mighty forces that once ruled the land. And through the hearts of these valleys flowed rivers — silver threads of life, as if time itself had taken the form of water to travel the earth.
One such river is the Ahja, winding and swift, like a forest serpent, feeding the land with fish and singing to the trees with its currents. Stretching for 102 kilometers, it is among Estonia’s richest rivers in species and beauty. Yet its greatest glory lies near a place called Taevaskoja, where the ancient valley reaches a depth of 32 meters and spreads to a width of 200 — like the open arms of an ancient goddess.
And there, among mossy slopes, whispering pines, and the ever-speaking waters, rises a sandstone cliff — golden and silent, like a piece of sunset frozen in stone. This is the Great Taevaskoda.
Taevaskoda — the Hall Where the Sky Dwells
From times immemorial, folk have called this place Taevaskoda — “Heavenly Hall,” or “House of the Sky.” It is no hall of timber and straw, but one made by nature herself: its floor is turf and moss, one wall is the grand sandstone cliff, the other — the ancient forest, and its roof — a patch of endless blue sky. Many believe it to be a natural temple, not built but born — a reminder that over all things, the sky remains.
The majestic exposure of sandstone rises 20 meters above the river, like the wall of a celestial palace veiled in silence and legend. Below it stands the Lesser Taevaskoda, 10 meters high — like a younger brother nestled at the skirt of the mother.
The old ones tell that the cliff once held secret caves — not ordinary ones, but places of power. There, imps and river spirits lived, and a mermaid with golden hair would comb it with a golden comb beneath the moon. A great serpent, too, was said to guard hidden passages. Yet such secrets are not for every soul — only for those with pure hearts who know the way by starlight.
How the Devil Built Himself a Heavenly Home
Among many tales, there is one passed down in hushed tones by firelight. It is said that once, the Devil, weary of human foolishness and noise, wandered to the banks of the Ahja River. When he saw the high cliffs, the golden slopes, and the forest crowning the waters, he sighed in delight. “Here,” he said, “here even I might find peace.”
In the cliffside, he carved chambers — fine rooms with stone arches and cool shadows, where no mortal eye could find him. He sowed grain upon the banks and planned to build a mill, harnessing the river’s power. He brought stone and timber, gears and beams. But then came a wild force — a whirlwind, cruel and cunning. The storm tore through the Devil’s work, scattering it like dry leaves. Only one massive cornerstone remained in the river — and it is still there, known as the “Devil’s Rock.”
The Devil, in his rage, abandoned the place and vanished. Yet the name he gave it remained — Taevaskoda, the Heavenly Home.
A Sacred Temple Not to Be Disturbed
To this day, the sandstone walls are sacred. None may scratch names into them, nor chip away at the stone — lest they anger the river spirits. Those who do may suffer misfortune: the mermaid may drag them beneath the waves, or they may become lost in the forest, where paths twist like knotted threads.
But if your heart is true, and you come not to destroy, but to listen and understand — then Taevaskoda will welcome you. You will see clouds mirrored in the river, hear the breath of the ancient earth, and perhaps, in the hush of whispering pines, you will feel it: that this land is mighty and alive, and even the stones remember the icy childhood of the world.
