Ruddy Kingfisher, Halcyon coromanda, perched in mangroves at Ao Phang Nga National Park, Thailand. Ruddy Kingfisher is usually a very shy bird of mangroves in Southern Thailand but when the breeding season begins they become much more active, particularly when establishing their territories. This one was part of a pair of Ruddy Kingfishers that were very tolerant of passers-by and allowed me to take this video as it rested in mangroves. In the background a Mangrove Pitta can be heard calling. Ruddy Kingfisher is a specialist mangrove kingfisher is Thailand although in other countries where it occurs it occupies a variety of forest types.
