The AFP (Alpha-fetoprotein) screening, a blood test during pregnancy, checks the baby's AFP level in the mother's blood. The baby's liver makes this protein, which is in the fluid around the baby (amniotic fluid). AFP travels from the amniotic fluid through the placenta into the mother's blood. Testing AFP levels can reveal potential neural tube issues in the developing brain and spinal cord.

The AFP test is typically done by taking blood from a vein between the 15th and 20th weeks of pregnancy.The protein's amount fluctuates (increase or decrease) during different weeks of pregnancy.

Abnormal levels of AFP can indicate:

Issues like spina bifida (open neural tube defects)
Down syndrome
Chromosomal abnormalities
Problems with the baby's abdominal wall
Having twins (more than one baby producing the protein)
Incorrect due date calculations, as the levels vary throughout pregnancy.

The AFP test is a part of screening that checks for hormones produced by placenta like hCG (Human chorionic gonadotropin hormone), Estriol, and Inhibin-A. If results are abnormal, more tests may be needed, and an ultrasound can help confirm pregnancy dates.
