Hello neighbors. It's Brad here at etrailer and today we're taking a look at the Brake Buddy select three proportional breaking system and portable breaking system on a 2017 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited. This is what our Brake Buddy looks like when it's installed and you can see it just uses a clamp to clamp out on the brake pedal and attached to that is gonna be an actuating arm. Now pretty easy when the brakes are applied on the RV, it's gonna apply the brakes on the vehicle as well. And that's gonna bring the towed vehicle to a slow or a stop proportional to what you are doing with the RV. It also has a breakaway switch, so in case of an accidental disconnect, it's gonna apply the brakes bringing the vehicle to a stop.

And the great thing about this system is it is portable so when you are done using it, you can simply unclamp it off the brake pedal, pull your cables out and you can store this somewhere else. So that's gonna be great, it's gonna go back to just a normal vehicle, whereas some of your other breaking systems, it's a little more evasive of an install and it does live with the vehicle. Now, sometimes it won't necessarily get in the way but having that portability with this Brake Buddy is wonderful. And also if down the road you plan on upgrading or changing your towed vehicle, you could bring this along with you and get the extra electronics to make those connections and you'll be good to go. Also included with the kit is going to be this dash-mounted monitor and that's gonna be great for your RV when you're driving when you've breaking your RV.

It's gonna actually let you know when you're breaking on your towed vehicle and that way you know for sure that that brake system is working. And also another great thing in case of an accidental disconnect, you will actually know right away that you have a breakaway emergency and you need to stop the vehicle. Now there's gonna be five main components that you need to flat tow your vehicle. First one is gonna be the base plate and what that's gonna do is attach to the frame of the vehicle and create the connection point for our tow bar. And that's gonna be our next one which is gonna be our connection point between the vehicle and the actual RV.

Now moving along we're also gonna have our safety chain loops here and that's gonna keep the vehicle attached to the tow bar and RV in case of an accidental disconnect and that way you don't have a vehicle just rolling down the highway. Going along with that, you also need your supplemental breaking system which is required in a lot of states. And you're gonna have a breakaway switch here and that's gonna bring the vehicle to a stop in case of an accidental disconnect, and you also have your diode wiring. And what that's gonna do is transmit the turn signals, break lights and running lights from your RV to your towed vehicle. So that's gonna allow people behind you to know when you're signaling, breaking or just driving at nighttime, they're gonna see that vehicle.

Now there may be a sixth component, and that in this case is gonna be a high-low adapter. And the reason being is you want the height of your RV to your tow vehicle to be within a window of less than three inches. And the way to determine that is you're gonna measure the center of the hitch pin hole to the ground and then the center of the hole here on our base plate to the ground and take those, subtract it, and if you are greater than three inches, you're gonna wanna pick up the high-low adapter that brings it under that three inch threshold. To begin our installation, I started off by putting up our breakaway switch. Now this is pretty easy to mount up by just drilling into your base plate here and they actually have a nice little bracket that holds it in place, as well as hook and loop to kind of keep it in place while actually mounting it up. And I just took the back tab and curled that up and attached it in the back. Sometimes people actually put it on a swivel so you can move it but I figured with this Jeep really moving it to the side's not gonna gain a whole lot, so this is the way that I chose to route it. And from this, you have a black and a red wire. The black and red wire off the back will need to be routed up to make contact with the actual plug from the interior side, where you plug the Brake Buddy in. So when routing these wires, I chose to go towards the driver's side. That way, when I poked through the grommet with the other wires it's gonna make it a little bit easier connection, a little bit less running of wires. So just to make the wires a little bit cleaner lookin
