500,000 citizens marched in Warsaw against the Law and Justice (PiS) government, responding to the call of the liberal opposition's leader Donald Tusk, backed by other key opposition parties. Since the women protests of 2020-2021, this was the largest opposition street event whose participants stood for democracy, human rights and restoring of the rule of law. The younger people demanded also that the restored democracy be social, and women rights be fully observed in Poland.
Cross-Border Talks' Małgorzata Kulbaczewska-Figat comments on the symbolic value of the march and its practical political outcome. While the liberal opposition managed to mobilize an impressive number of people, support for PiS remains strong in the opinion polls. A considerable part of Polish society remembers the times of liberals in power as time of poverty and lack of respect. For them, PiS is not a democracy-breaker which must be stopped, but a political force who addressed them and offered a sort of efficient social policy. And while personal popularity of Donald Tusk in democratic and (neo)liberal circles was proven, Polish society remains deeply polarized and the political life consists of the clash of two tendencies, liberal and pro-European and conservative-Catholic-distanced from Europe, with little space remaining apart of them.
