Born in Volsinii, Etruria (modern-day Italy) around 30 AD, Gaius Musonius Rufus became a prominent philosopher and teacher of Stoicism in ancient Rome. He believed that philosophy should not be confined to theoretical discussions, and instead, emphasized the practical application of Stoic principles to everyday life, advocating for self-discipline, virtue, and living in harmony with nature. He stressed the value of simplicity, frugality, and self-control, aiming to help his students develop a strong sense of inner resilience and wisdom. This resilience proved useful in his own life as he was exiled three separate times under the Roman Emperors Nero and Vespasian in their attempts to rid Rome of its philosophers.
