Where does the word Firdaws come from? How was the Arab-Islamic view of history formed? Are the Arabian Nights actually Persian Nights? These and other cases of the Iranian influence on Arabic culture from the 6th to the 14th century and beyond will be discussed during the lecture. The Iranian influence can be seen in various fields of Arabic culture, including language, literature, and historiography, which will be in the focus of the lecture.

Dr Jaakko Hämeen-Anttila is the Iraq Professor of Arabic and Islamic Studies in Edinburgh. He has published widely on Classical Arabic literature and cultural transmission around the Mediterranean.
