Описание к видео Farewell to Arms - Donald Novis & Anson Weeks' Orchestra., 1932

Anson Weeks & His Orchestra with Vocal Refrain by Donald Novis - Farewell to Arms, Fox trot (Wrubel -- Silver), Brunswick 1932 (USA)

NOTE: This song and its title -- as it writes on the sheet music -- was "suggested by Ernest Hemingway's novel". "Farewell to Arms" was the first great novel of Hemingway. Published in United States in 1931, it became an enormous literary success. Also very successful, two years later was the movie with Helen Hayes and Gary Coopoer, based on Hemingway's novel. The story has roots in writer's own experience gained from his two monts service at the American Red Cross on the Italian-Austrian front in the final stages of World War I. The novelist looks at the war from a distance and free from any exaltation of the eye, creates one of the classic works of world anti-war literature, unveiling cruelty and senseless tragedy of mass killing of people. Yet, in the same time " Farewell to Arms " is one of the most beautiful - and saddest - love stories of the 20th century. The rather simple yet well told story of the unlucky love affair between a young American ambulance driver (Gary Cooper) and English nurse (Helen Hayes) -- ceased by her death during a long and painful birth, when their son was stillborn -- remains till to-day a popular and well-thought-of love story of two people who need each other in a period of chaos.

Anson WEEKS' orchestra was one of the best West Coast dance bands in the years of the Great Depression and through the decade of the 1930s. By the late 1920s he led a popular regional orchestra in Oakland, CA and started recording for Columbia in 1928. In 1931 he appeared in a popular radio program "Lucky Strike Magic Carpet". His vocalists then included Donald Novis, Bob Crosby, Kay St. Germaine and a few more well known singers. In 1932, he signed with Brunswick and recorded prolifically for them through 1935. During this time, his was one of Brunswick's premier bands and was nationally popular. His career broke when in 1941 Weeks was involved in a car accident and for a prolonged period he was out of the pop-music mainstream. Although back on air and stage, through the mid- and late 1940s he failed to regain his previous popularity.
