What is an XML sitemap?
An XML sitemap is a list of your website's URLs. A sitemap tells search engines what content is available on your website and how to reach it. Google allows new website owners to submit their sitemap so that their website is in the cue to get crawled by their spiders.

Sitemaps are very useful when you first start a blog or build a new website because most new websites don't have any backlinks.

In short, sitemaps help increase the ranking of a website in search engine results, as a result boosting the SEO efforts.

Step #1 You need to have a Gmail to submit your XML sitemap to Google. This means you must also be signed in to your Gmail account.

Step #2 Go to Google Search Console, navigate to the left-hand-side and click Sitemaps.

Step #3 Go to Add a New Sitemap and input sitemap.xml and click submit.

You'll then see a pop-up stating that your sitemap was submitted successfully. If you happen to get an error, make sure that your website is not password protected. Your website must be live to submit your sitemap to Google.

If you received a sitemap error, you can easily resubmit your sitemap without removing your sitemap that has an error or you can delete your sitemap that has an error and start over by clicking the three dots on the top right-hand corner of your sitemap page and then resubmit your sitemap.

Remember, Shopify, Squarespace and Wix automatically generate your XML sitemap. This means all you need to do is log into Google Search Console and follow the steps above.
