One day NS 8102, Norfolk Southern's Pennsylvania Railroad Heritage Unit, showed up at Tipton Indiana. This was most unexpected, as the Frankfort Subdivision doesn't see a huge amount of traffic, so a Heritage Unit is big news! Seeing it sit on the wye track was more unexpected still! Over some 30 days, this unit roamed the Frankfort Sub, working the yards at Tipton, Muncie, and Frankfort, generally tying down at the end of the day at Tipton.
What a treat it was to see it several times and to shoot it! Finding it in action was a challenge, but a worthy challenge. Best catch was the last snowy day of its' stay, turning on the wye and working Cargill in Tipton. I doubt this was a planned residency, but the extended stay was most welcome.
This long video is a holiday bonus! It includes the introduction of the Bituminous Kole Checklists for Norfolk Southern units; footage of the ex-Nickel Plate yard in Frankfort to see the roundhouse, turntable, and coaling tower; "failed" chases; a train crossing at grade with a BNSF unit as DPU; a look at Tipton's yard; a lot of snow, and many images of the NS 8102, of course!
