Biruté Galdikas (born 1946) is a pioneering primatologist, ethologist, and conservationist whose groundbreaking work with orangutans has reshaped our understanding of these great apes and their fragile ecosystems. A student of Jane Goodall and Louis Leakey, Galdikas was sent to the rainforests of Borneo to study orangutans in their natural habitat, becoming one of the “Trimates” alongside Goodall and Dian Fossey.
