This weekend I took the Adventure John Outdoors rig—my Cirrus 620 truck camper on a 2022 F-350—to the peaceful and scenic Frakers Grove Farm in Lafayette, Illinois. Tucked away in the rural Midwest, this gem of a location has deep roots in local history—once part of an early settlement that gave the grove its name. The property has now become a peaceful retreat where nature, history, and hospitality meet.

A huge thank you to Dennis, the manager of the farm, for being such an incredible and welcoming host. His passion for the land shows in every detail—from the maintained campsites to the stocked fishing pond teeming with bass and crappie, and even the massive pond monsters I spotted just below the surface—some easily 3 feet long!

After a day of fishing and soaking in the tranquil beauty of the area, I cooked one of my favorite camp meals: mushroom, onion, and bacon-smothered chicken, covered with Colby Jack cheese and paired with Brussels sprouts fried in bacon and bacon grease. It was the perfect meal to enjoy under the stars.
