RAND LOGISTICS GRAND RIVER NAVIGATION TUG DEFIANCE BARGE ASHTABULA Windsor Aerial Drone Photography

Tugboat Tuesday with Rand Logistics tug Defiance and the Barge Ashtabula.

Built in 1982, this 705' foot pair continues to be a common site on the Great Lakes.

Constructed by Marinette Marine of Marinette Wisconsin in 1982, the tug was launched as the April T. Beker for Beker Transportation of Tampa, Florida where she operated in the Gulf of Mexico. She was acquired five years later by Gulfcoast Transit Company of Tampa and renamed the Beverly Anderson.

Another owner and several years later, she was acquired by Grand River Navigation.

Following a major refit, she was renamed Defiance and her partner the barge Mary Turner was re-christened the Ashtabula.

The pair regularly transport sand, stone, salt and coal from Lake Superior to Lake Erie.
