A quick and reliable method to determine the purity of solid precious metals (such as gold, silver, or even gemstones) is to apply the Archimedes' Principle using a balance or a scale.
All METTLER TOLEDO balances have a hook below the instrument that is ideally suited for this purpose. In this video, we show you how to use the hook below the balance in place of a density kit.

Using the Archimedes' Principle, first weigh the object normally, i.e. in air, and then weigh the same object immersed in a liquid of a known density and temperature. The apparent differences in mass between these 2 measurements gives the purity or density of the object. A JET jewelry balance guides you step-by-step on the touchscreen display through this simple process, and then calculates the purity/density of the object for you.
