Dorsten is a city in Germany, in North Rhine-Westphalia.

It is subordinate to the administrative district of Munster. It is part of the district of Recklinghausen. It lies on the River Lippe, approx. 24 km from its confluence with the Rhine. The old town of Dorsten (south of Lippe) became a city on 1 June 1251, the present-day city was incorporated in the 20th century when large areas were added north of Lippe.

Dorsten is situated on both sides of the Lippe River, most of it to the north. Geological and archaeological research has shown that the first settlement here was founded on a floodplain island in the middle of two branches of the river.

Geologically, the area can be divided into two parts: west is an area of marine Tertiary deposits; east is an area of Cretaceous deposits (middle and upper santonian stages). Quaternary deposits, including moraine ridges and hills, are common everywhere. In the west and north there are still quite a lot of forests, especially on the moraine hills. These areas have their own specific names: Dämmer Wald, Üfter Mark and Hohe Mark.

Outside of the city Dorsten is known for the discovery of a Roman camp called Holsterhausen by archaeologists.
