Today we discuss about how nurseries force, or trick orchids into thinking their flowering season has arrived.

There aren't many orchids that can be made to bloom no matter the season, but the ones who can be controlled happen to be quite the more popular ones.

Orchids such as Cattleyas, Oncidiums and Vandas are free flowering, or can bloom at least twice a year. It would not be necessary to go through the hassles of controlling climate, since these orchids are willing to bloom often anyway. I am not entirely sure about Dendrobium Phalaenopsis types.

Dendrobium nobile and Phalaenopsis orchids are the most notable orchids forced into blooming. The reason is that they only bloom once per year on a main stem, according to season. Nurseries adjust their internal climate and create false seasons, so that we can enjoy these orchids no matter the season. After care is a different story, but more on this in part 2 ;)
