Pope John Paul II on Monday (6/2) called on Christians, Jews and
Moslems to unite in bringing peace to the Holy Land. The pope also
touched on the Nazi Holocaust saying its memory should serve to
bring Jews and Roman Catholics closer together. The Pope was
addressing leaders of the influential American Jewish Committee
(AJC) in a Vatican speech to mark the 50th anniversary of the
liberation of Auschwitz death camp in his native Poland, and the
30th anniversary of a major Vatican document which repudiated the
idea of collective Jewish guilt for Christ's death.

encyclical that condemns anti-Semitism permanently, now and
forever, for nearly a billion Catholics. I'll take it in any form
it comes. It's a very important turning point if one thinks about
the history of the Church and the Jews."

and quite commendable in his condemnation of anti-Semitism. It's
one of the things he's been remarkably forceful about. We asked
him to reduce this to an encyclical so that it would become a
permanent piece of the Church's teachings. And that's something
we're quite pleased about."
