2nd 🌊 Session. Song # 14 ~ "Crazy Fingers" by the Grateful Dead. As I mentioned when we did 'Deal' at the beginning of these sessions, I was late to the good ole' GD party relative to my obsession with bands that should have lead me to them earlier. There was however one exception I left out. During my junior year of High School, when I was already certain that I would somehow end up spending my life with Michelle after just meeting her the Summer prior, I used to drive 75 minutes each way to see a Grateful Dead cover band several times a month called Crazy Fingers at a place called The Fisherman's Wharf. The club/bar has long since closed, but amazingly the cover band is still playing 23 years later. At that time I could already recite lyrics and chord progressions for Phish tunes like a bar-mitzvah boy reading his parsha after a year of memorized practiced, but I wouldn't have been able to tell you that Crazy Fingers was a song by the Grateful Dead. In short, I was at the gig to chase a girl. Don't get me wrong the band was incredible, and they were my true introduction to the Dead's music, but more importantly, these bi-monthly mini road trips as a 16 or 17 year old, helped Michelle and I establish a friendship, that eventually became a marriage. Michelle later educated me on the cannon of music and history of the GD, and shortly thereafter I fell in love with pretty much everything "Jerry".

So for that reason, during these "Days Between" (for those who don't know; these mark the days between Jerry Garcia's bday on Aug 1st and his passing on Aug 9th), Simone and I decided to learn "Crazy Fingers" in honor of the cover band that turned me onto the GD and gave me an excuse to hang out with my future wife when we were just teenagers.

This tune is no joke. The changes in rhythm, the progression, key changes...and it's very tricky to sing (at least for me). Chord progression wise, it's very much a jazz tune, while rhythmically it switches between a reggae feel and a ballad. I find it to be a beautiful tune for all its strangeness in composition. I always thought it would be amazing to hear a trained jazz singer tackle the tune (please send to me if you know of one). Big thanks to Ellie Small (Amy) who is back with us for our current "escape from Miami" trip for the awesome camera work. The cool camera angle gave it a natural "trippy" feel, and thanks to Sara for helping us out with the lyrics. I love the tune, but I honestly can't tell you what it's about. Hope you all dig our take on it, and rest in peace Jerry.
