NOTE: This English waltz from 1934 had not had its premiere on stage of any of the crowded Warsaw cabarets or revue theatres; nor was it composed by one of the gods of prewar songwriting like Petersburski, Gold or Wars and performed on silver screen, conquering in a split second thousands of fans (especially, if sung by Aleksander Żabczyński or Witold Conti...). Instead, it was recorded by small Hawaii guitar ensamble with the refrain sung by Tadeusz Faliszewski (also, recorded was version 2. sung by Adam Aston). However, not many of hugest hits of the year 1934 could compete in popularity with this little English waltz, with the lyrics telling a romantic story about the night rendezvous of the Marquise with her page, in a dark castle garden. "W tę noc przy dźwiękach serenady /skradł serce paź księżniczki bladej..." (On that night, by the sound of a serenade/ the pale princesse's heart was stolen by her page..."
In that text, the heroine is sometimes "the marquise" and sometimes "the pale princesse...". Who cares. The record sold in dozens thousands of copies, the same large was the sheet notes' success. OK. Therefore, for the photographs-parade I made the selection of the rarest shots taken at the Polish upper class' masquerade balls, which were held in Warsaw and in Cracow during the inter-war period. One princesse (rather pale-looking, indeed), one (robust) countess, one Marquise (performed by a hunky gentleman) a few rather aging pages and one quite ugly Polish prince can be found there: not in each detail appropriately to the lyrics. I can only regret, the technical shape of this recording is so poor.
