No three-part invention is quite like this one. It stands out as the longest, but it's also the most melancholic, tonically ambiguous and dissonant style you could find in Bach's era. It's heartbreaking! It also features spectacular compositional technique. At its core it's a fugue, but that very difficult to hear, as he uses three very distinct motifs equally.

Recorded on Werkmeister III temperament, a common choice of historical tuning for baroque music, in October 2024.
