Here's a fun challenge for strong beginner - to intermediate level hikers: trek to the Gaviota Wind Caves. You'll find the trail head just above Gaviota State Beach and Park, off Highway 101 between Santa Barbara and Solvang (just south of the Gaviota Tunnel).

Take the turnoff to Gaviota State Beach - and then veer right before you get to the beach parking pay station. You'll go up a slight incline and see some parking spaces. Then go through the gate - and walk for about 15 minutes to get to the trail head. That's when the climbing begins.

You’ll encounter one steep hill - and one small area where you’ll need to hike over a rocky surface. The trails are a bit narrow - with sharp brush on either side of you. It took us around 45 minutes to get to the first cave - hiking at a leisurely pace.

We believe the sandstone caves were formed by strong winds which often howl through the area. Afternoons can be extremely windy along the Gaviota Coast. Once you get into the hills - you’ll see beautiful peek-a-boo views of the ocean and a train bridge - as well as surrounding green peaks. Take this hike in screen when you'll see much more greenery on the hills, along with blankets of yellow mustard flowers.
