Why I Made This YouTube Channel?

I am a visual storyteller. I love telling stories and narratives, especially the kind that inspires and shines a light in our hearts and minds. My previous work in independent films and comics have leaned upon mental health issues such as depression, schizophrenia and suicide - and the feedback I have received from these stories has been overwhelmingly positive. It inspired me and encouraged me to further go down this track of contributing to the mental health narrative, in particularly using my skills in writing, film, design, & art, to help further illustrate this issue where in many countries and communities this is still treated with a lack of understanding and compassion. So the logical step was to use my visual storytelling skills to continue the mental health conversation on the biggest and widest platform ever... YouTube!

Who is this channel for?

In a 2017 study it is estimated that 792 million people lived with a mental health disorder in the world. This is more than one in ten people globally! In the United States, approximately 1 in 4 adults and 1 in 5 children had a mental health disorder - most commonly anxiety and depression.
This channel is for us who are struggling and battling with our mental health issues, most likely in secret. This is also for our young people who face so many challenges and struggles and are not yet fully equipped to deal with their mental health nor have the adequate language to express their emotions. This channel is also for those who have a friend or family member or who knows someone that suffers from a mental illness and want to better understand their condition and be more compassionate and supportive of them. Lastly, this channel is for those in the dark, the ignorant or naive ones, who really don't know what mental health is all about and how important it is for everybody.

What problem does this channel solve?

This channel helps to understand our mental health issues and how to deal with them. Also, people with mental health problems like us often suffer in silence and solitude because the rest of society does not understand what we're really going through or what it means to have a mental illness. This is for them. To break that ignorance loop and eliminate stigma so that apathy becomes empathy where it's needed.

How is this channel different?

C'mon! We all love movies. We all love Netflix. In short, we all love stories. This channel is going to talk about mental health BUT in a language universal to all, that is the language of visual stories. I come from a film-making and graphic design background, so I'm going to use these skills and tools to express the realities and struggles of mental health in a more visually understandable and empathetic way. Apart from being informative, I hope to bring a cinematic sensibility to the mental health narrative.

Why should someone subscribe?

To learn more about your own mental health struggle and how to deal with it, to be more equipped to understand others with mental illness, to help spread more awareness and end mental health stigma in our society.

My educational background is in Multimedia Design and more recently I received my Bachelor of Philosophy degree. But I have recently completed a certified training to be a Mental Health Ambassador as well currently taking up an EdX online course in Clinical Psychology from the University of Queensland in Australia.

I am just someone who wants to promote good mental health and is willing to stand up and talk about it, to even try to be there when someone needs to talk, all the while sharing these mental health stories that need to be told in today’s society to break the stigma that is still associated with mental illness.

As a Mental Health Ambassador, think of me not as the answer or savior to your mental health problems but rather as someone who can guide and show you where and how to get you support and the answers you need for your real-life struggles.
