The Story of Michael Chang: When a 17 year old shone at The French Open

At the time of posting this video, the 2023 French Open is well and truly underway. Hope you are enjoying all the action!

To celebrate the only clay court Grand Slam event in tennis, I’ve decided to go through one of the most spectacular, memorable stories in the event’s over 130 year history.

The protagonist; an unassuming, 5 foot 9 teenager, by the name of Michael Chang.
The backdrop; The 1989 French Open.
A tournament that featured a competitive field of some of the sports all time greats. Players like; Lendl, Becker and Agassi, to name a few.

The wonder kid, Chang, would surprise everyone at this event - having a run for the ages, that featured some of the most epic battles ever seen on the red courts of Roland Garros!

The 17 year old would steal the hearts of the tennis world at Paris, with his unbelievable grit, determination and will; marking his name in Tennis history!

Before this though, I’ll first take a little look at Michael Chang’s journey to get to that point. From this prodigies relatively late introduction into tennis; his rapid progression from the juniors to the pros; to his first couple of years on tour - a period that really shaped him as a world beater.
The video will then culminate with his magical run at the 1989 French Open.
