The Western Sandpiper (Calidris mauri) is a small shorebird, about 6.5 inches long, with a long, slightly drooping bill and black legs. It breeds in the Arctic and migrates along the Pacific coast, feeding on insects and crustaceans in shallow wetlands and mudflats. In breeding plumage, it has rusty-brown feathers on its head and back, while non-breeding birds are gray. They are found in shallow wetlands, mudflats and estuaries during migration.

Often mixed with the Least Sandpipers, it may sometimes be difficult to identify Western Sandpipers, however note a comparatively larger size than Least Sandpipers and their completely different foraging strata mostly in areas with shallow water where they can probe with their short slightly drooping bill, but note the speed of probing is much slower than Least Sandpipers which is a key behavior.
