Japan vs Spain - Overwatch World Cup 2017 Sydney Qualifier Highlights

Spain's national team is composed of a mix of talent with players who have played on amateur teams to the likes of EnVyUs' Harryhook who is considered to be one of the best Lucio players in the west. What is unique about this roster is not the raw talent that has been selected, but the abundance of Lucio players in this lineup. DhaK and neptuNo previous played as the main Lucio for Selfless and Movistar Riders respectively. Rounding off the team are Winghaven, a former member of Laser Kittenz and former Team Dignitas players BromaS and ToxikeN.

Japan are without a doubt the wildcard of Group D as little is known about this mysterious team which is both a blessing as competitors can't scout information on these players, but also a curse as they have not had the chance to test themselves against high level international competition until today. While most of the players are unknown, a handful have competed at the OPC and in preparation for the World Cup, this team has been scrimming and learning from the lower tier APEX teams.

Heading into this series many had expected Spain to tear through their first match at the Overwatch World Cup, but Japan were more than ready for whatever the European team had planned. With unprecedented aggression and the ability to instantly pull the trigger on support ultimates, Japan's constant pressure overwhelmed Spain throughout the series. In a hard fought battle on Volskaya, Spain pulled out a perfect defense of Point A in the tiebreaker map to claim their first an only map win of the day. Japan will be a team to keep an eye on as they've proven to be a team that has the potential to take on the best in their group and advance onward to BlizzCon 2017.

The Overwatch World Cup is an international tournament with the national teams from the 32 participating countries battling it out over the course of the summer in four separate qualifiers around the world hosted in China, Australia, Poland, and the United States.

Two groups will compete at each of the Group Stage qualifiers in a Round Robin format with the top from each group moving onto a single elimination bracket. Each series features four maps with teams seeded based on average Skill Rating. Map priority is given to the higher seeded team for the first map of the series. It is important to remember that these matches are not a best-of-three series and will focus on winning as many maps as possible as the two teams with the most points by the end of the Round Robin stage will advance onto the next round,

The first place team from each group will play the second place team in the opposite group. The winners of this stage will move on to the live playoffs at BlizzCon 2017.
