Guinea Stadium Stampede: At Least 135 Killed In Stampede After Football Fans Clash In Guinea Tragedy

New details and estimates have emerged day after the horrific Guinea Football Tragedy. The estimated death toll has gone up from 56 to 135 with around 50 still missing, as per a Guinea rights group.

The fatal crush occurred on December 1 due to a disputed referee decision during a tournament final match. The tragedy took place in Guinea’s second-largest city Nzerekore. NGOs have disputed the official figure gathering data from regional hospital, eyewitnesses, cemeteries, victims’ families and local press.

Most of the victims who died at the stadium were children under 18. The government has claimed that dissatisfied fans threw stones which led to a stampede. The group has made shocking allegations, blaming the ruling junta for the deaths.

Security forces are accused of using excessive tear gas and prioritizing security of attending officials over fans. It has also alleged that vehicles taking officials out of the stadium struck fleeing spectators.
