How magnificent is Mount Tai! Stretching across the boundless, verdant land of Shandong! Nature has poured all its essence into this magical and beautiful place. The scenery on the south and north sides of the mountain is completely different, like dawn and dusk. Clouds and mist swirl around the mountainside, stirring the heart. Gazing into the distance, flocks of birds circle and disappear into the deep forest. When you reach the summit, the surrounding peaks all appear so small.
岱(dài)宗(zōng): Mount Tai, also known as Daishan or Daiyue, is the foremost of the Five Sacred Mountains in China, revered by all other mountains, hence the honorific title "岱(dài)宗(zōng)." It is located north of Tai'an City, Shandong Province. Ancient emperors held their grand Fengshan ceremonies on this mountain.
齐(qí)、鲁(lǔ): Originally the names of two states during the Spring and Autumn and Warring States periods in Chinese history, Qi and Lu were separated by Mount Tai, with Qi to the north and Lu to the south. Both are now within Shandong Province, and the term "齐(qí)鲁(lǔ)" later came to refer to the Shandong region.
This poem, through its depiction of Mount Tai's majestic grandeur, highly praises its imposing presence and beautiful scenery. It also reveals the poet's fearless spirit and ambition to climb to the summit and overlook the world below. The last two lines of the poem have long been used as inspirational phrases. Only by standing tall can you see further.
杜(dù)甫(fǔ)(712-770), a native of Gongxian County, Henan Prefecture (present-day Gongyi City, Henan Province), was a great realist poet of the Tang Dynasty, revered as the "Poet Sage." He lived through the turbulent transition of the Tang Dynasty from its peak to its decline. He suffered poverty in his childhood, failed the imperial examinations, and although he briefly held an official position, his career was fraught with difficulties. In middle age, he was trapped in Chang'an, served as an official during the An Lushan Rebellion, and in his later years wandered in the southwest. He was deeply concerned about his country and its people and possessed a noble character. Approximately 1400 of his poems have been preserved, most of his poetry reflects the hardships of war and is hailed as "poetic history." He ultimately died of illness and poverty on a boat on the Xiang River at the age of fifty-nine. He is highly respected and has had a profound influence on classical Chinese poetry. He lived in Chengdu from 759 to 766, and the Du Fu Thatched Cottage was later built in his memory.

"唐(táng)诗(shī)三(sān)百(bǎi)首(shǒu)" is a widely circulated anthology of Tang poems, which is almost a household well known in China. So, there is a saying: "If you read and recite those three hundred Tang poems, you could be a poet yourself." When one learns 300 poems of the Tang Dynasty by heart, one is sure to be a poet.
"Three Hundred Tang Poems" is an anthology of Tang poems compiled by Sun Zhu, Qing Dynasty, and was completed in the 29th year of Qianlong (1764). The selected poems are all popular masterpieces of Tang poetry, including representative works of various schools of Tang poetry in various periods. It brings together the essence of Tang Dynasty poetry, and its genres and themes are very wide, including natural phenomena, political dynamics, labor, social life, etc., which reflects the full picture of Tang poetry in a relatively comprehensive way, and can help readers appreciate the deep connotation of Tang poetry.
