I want to start with an important reminder. As of today – Friday, September 1st – House Bill 114 is officially state law.

This new law dictates that any student with a vape pen, e-cigarette, cartridges, or oils in their possession will be removed from class and sent to a disciplinary alternative education program, such as the North East Alternative Center or In School Suspension. 

Please continue to speak with your child about the consequences of vaping. This is now state law and a Student Code of Conduct violation. NEISD does not have any disciplinary discretion here.

Vaping comes with harmful health risks and will now result in a serious disruption to your child’s education. Tips related to drugs, such as vaping, is one of several categories listed on our NEISD tipline (neisd.net/tipline). Please utilize this resource as we continue to work together to keep our neighborhood schools safe.

Also new in September, the Texas Education Agency (TEA) is expected to release A-F ratings to Texas public schools as part of its Accountability System. Each district and school will receive a letter grade.  

Please know there were substantial changes to the test and the way TEA calculates letter grades. According to TEA, a school or district could achieve the exact same level of success as in years past but receive a lower letter grade from TEA. 

These changes from TEA are disheartening, especially since we have both witnessed how hard our teachers and support staff work to provide the highest quality education to your children. However, this doesn’t change our mission to provide new opportunities and innovative lessons that inspire your child in and out of the classroom.
