I recently talked about some of my influences regarding solo guitar style for a student, and found this great arrangement by William “Bill” Leavitt of “Here’s that Rainy Day” that I studied back when I was in high school. Bill was one of the original Berklee guitar program founders and clearly a master of arranging for the guitar. (This piece is full of fresh contrapuntal ideas and much more.) I have long felt that in “arranging”or “composing” interesting ideas we can hopefully expand our palette as improvisors as well. In that spirit, I filmed an hour long analysis lesson that delves into the original arrangement as well as some changes I added on my version. The session also serves as a great introduction to playing in the semi-rubato solo guitar style and many performance tips are included along the way.
