The Little Match Girl, written by Hans Christian Andersen in 1845, is a brutal fairy tale with no happy ending—just a glimpse of beauty before the dark.

On a freezing New Year’s Eve, a young girl walks the streets, trying to sell matches. She’s barefoot, starving, and terrified of going home to her abusive father, who will beat her for not bringing any money.

Desperate for warmth, she strikes a match.

In the flame, she sees visions—

A fireplace to warm her frozen hands.

A table filled with food, to fill her empty stomach.

A glowing Christmas tree, brighter than any she’s ever seen.

And finally, her grandmother, the only person who ever loved her.

With her last match, she reaches for that vision—
and in that moment, she dies.

The next morning, the townspeople find her body, cold and still, with a smile on her face. They never saw her pain. They never heard her dreams.

The Little Match Girl isn’t a fairy tale.
It’s a story about the forgotten—
and how sometimes, the only escape from suffering
is to leave the world behind.
