@Floyd's out there slicing people up with a sword!" Lionsgate has revealed the official trailer for Freaky Tales, an anthology film set in Oakland in the late 1980s.


This first premiered at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival a whole year ago, to mostly mixed & positive reviews (I was there at the world premiere - it was a blast).

It's finally getting an official theatrical release in April this spring after a long wait. From directors Anna Boden & Ryan Fleck, four interconnected stories set in 1987 in Oakland, California will tell about the love of music, movies, people, places, and memories beyond our knowable universe.


The full cast features Pedro Pascal, Ben Mendelsohn, Jay Ellis, Normani, Dominique Thorne, Jack Champion, Ji-young Yoo, Angus Cloud, and Tom Hanks (yep!).


One segment is about a group of partygoers fighting back against neo-Nazi punks, another is about a basketball player getting revenge after a robbery, and one other segment is about a debt collector played by Pascal.

They're all way more badass & edgy than expected, with some unforgettable moments throughout. I

Set in 1987 Oakland, CA, Boden & Fleck's Freaky Tales is a multi-track mixtape of colorful characters — an NBA star, a corrupt cop, a female rap duo, teen punks, neo-Nazis, and a debt collector — on a collision course in a fever dream of showdowns and battles.


Executive produced by hip-hop pioneer Too $hort, and featuring an all-star ensemble including Pedro Pascal, Ben Mendelsohn, Jay Ellis, Normani, Dominique Thorne, Jack Champion, Ji-young Yoo, Angus Cloud, and Tom Hanks, this pulpy blend of explosive action, edgy humor, gory kills, and sly twists and turns makes for one wild ride.


Freaky Tales is co-written and co-directed by the American indie filmmakers Ryan Fleck & Anna Boden, both directors of the films Half Nelson, Sugar, It's Kind of a Funny Story, Mississippi Grind, and Captain Marvel previously, plus a few episodes of HBO's "Master of the Air" series most recently.


It's produced by Anna Boden, Ryan Fleck, Jelani Johnson, Poppy Hanks.


This initially premiered at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival last year.


Lionsgate will finally debut Freaky Tales in theaters starting on April 4th, 2025 coming soon this spring.
