A hard disk drive, or HDD, works by storing and retrieving digital data using spinning disks coated with magnetic material. Inside the drive, there are one or more platters that rotate at high speed. Data is written and read by a tiny device called a read-write head, which hovers just above the surface of the spinning platters without touching them.

When you save a file, the HDD’s controller sends electrical signals to the read-write head. The head then changes the magnetic direction of tiny areas on the platter’s surface, representing bits of data as patterns of magnetism. When you want to access that file, the head moves back to the correct location and senses those magnetic patterns, converting them back into usable data.

The platters are divided into tracks and sectors, which help organize where data is stored. The actuator arm moves the read-write head across the platters to reach the correct track. This process happens very quickly, allowing the HDD to access large amounts of data in a short time, although not as fast as solid state drives.

HDDs are valued for their high storage capacity and relatively low cost. They are commonly used in desktops, laptops, servers, and external backup systems. However, because they have moving parts, they are more vulnerable to damage from shock or drops compared to solid state drives, which use no moving parts.

Despite newer technologies, HDDs continue to be widely used for storing large files like photos, videos, and software, where speed is less critical than capacity and cost.
