Transcript:
Cheshire Cat is a fictional character cat notable for its broad grin and its ability to disappear and reappear at will in Alice's Adventures in Wonderland (1865) by Lewis Carroll. The phrase grin like a Cheshire Cat predates Carol's story, and although experts have guessed at its meaning, its origin remains mysterious. Cheshire Cat is a member of the duchess's household, and when it appears before Alice, it assures her that everyone in Wonderland is mad and that it doesn't much matter which path she follows if she doesn't care where she's going. The cat's ability to vanish Slowly, sections disconcert Alice, who at one point finds herself in the presence of only the cat's grin. Grinning like a Cheshire Cat was an old proverb long before it was used by Lewis Carroll. One theory for the origin of the saying involves the Cheshire Cheese molds. There are many reports that Carol found inspiration for the name and expression of the Cheshire Cat in the 16th century. Sandstone carving of a grinning cat on the west face of Saint Wilfred's Church Tower in Grappenhall, a village adjacent to his birthplace, and Daresbury Werrington Richard Arlen played the Cheshire Cat in the 1933 film version of Alice in Wonderland. The cat appears as a mysterious, mischievous pink and purple cat with a devious, mischievous personality. Alice encounters him in the woods and asks for directions back home, so he directs her to the Mad Hatter and March Hair. After the confusing and useless visit, Ellis gets lost and encounters him again, and the Cheshire Cat directs her to the Queen of Hearts for help, but before she goes, he warns her of the Queen's evil ways. During the visit, the Cheshire Cat constantly humiliates the queen, and she thinks it's Alice every single time. While in court, the Cheshire Cat repeats the insult Alice gives the Queen, which leads to the climactic chase. The 1999 Alice in Wonderland film shows the Cheshire Cat as a gray cat who speaks to Alice in Wonderland as well as a visitor at the Garden Party. The voice and face of the cat are both played by Whoopi Goldberg, and Cheshire Cat is the only character in Wonderland who actually listens to Alice with his remarks. He teaches Alice the rules of Wonderland and gives her insight. Lewis Carroll kept changing details in the story throughout his life, and in some editions of the story, the name of the cat is spelled Cheshire Cat with a dash and not Cheshire Cat with just a space. It's not a hundred percent clear why Carol named this character Cheshire Cat to grin like a Cheshire, which was a common phrase in Carol's day; its origin is unknown. There are two main theories that seek to discover why the Cheshire Cat might have strange powers. The first one suggests that the Cheshire smile might be reminiscent of a crescent moon, and thus the powers of the moon as it fades in and out across the sky and floats ever out of reach were transferred to the Cheshire Cat himself; however, there is a second theory that wonders if the Cheshire Cat came straight from the childlike imagination of Lewis Carroll. Carol spent lots of time inside Saint Peter's Church in an English village named Croft on Tees, where Carol's father was a rector. On the east wall, there was a stone carving of a cat head that appeared to have a wide grin. Cheshire is a dairy county long noted for its cheese and dairy products, and there used to be a cheese warehouse on the banks of the River D in the county town of Chester. When that fair city was also a port, the port cats were said to assemble on the dockside and await the rats and mice that would leave ships when they docked, ready to go on a cargo of Cheshire Cheese. This made them the happiest cats in the kingdom, hence their grins. Disney had a film version of him sporting pink and purple stripes, which is depicted on several postage stamps. A darker and quite different interpretation of the cat appeared in the 2000 computer game American McGee's Alice. Here I'd like to illustrate some of the best Cheshire Cat makeup that I've found throughout my research of different cosplay conferences. You will also find different types of cosplay costumes, outfits, pajamas, and jumpers that really make me smile when I think about what it would be like to be the Cheshire Cat.
