"I don't think the system is broke. I think the system was designed to do what it's doing. When men of my color, when men are in poverty, when men can't have the resources to get the representation they need; I think they're ignored. All the evidence I had, it was as if to prove my innocence, it was insignificant. The family, I'm so sorry that men, the district attorney who were trained in these universities that came in these courtrooms and withheld the evidence that they held and convinced these families without the evidence showing them in the trials of the fact needed to see this evidence. The public needed to see this evidence. When you withhold something like that and you convince a family that someone did something they didn't do; that's what I regret."

STORYLINE:
A man who spent nearly four decades behind bars for a 1983 killing has won his freedom after New Orleans prosecutors joined defense lawyers in asking to have his conviction overturned.
Attorneys on both sides said evidence of inconsistencies in the only eyewitness's testimony was kept from the jury that convicted Raymond Flanks.
Their joint motion to vacate his conviction was approved Thursday morning.
Flanks was convicted in the December 1983 shooting death of Martin Carnesi during an armed robbery.
Carnesi's wife had identified Flanks as the killer. But her descriptions differed at trial from her earlier statements.
