This is a poem I wrote as a Dr. Seuss alternative. It can be hard to let go of his work when it's been so nostalgic for many of us. However, "...when you know better, do better" (Maya Angelou). And we've come to see how harmful and wrong his work has been (please look into this further if you're unfamiliar). So, I wanted to write something that takes this similar style, but use it to flip the script. This poem is all about diversity and celebrating our differences.
"If I Were to Wish"
If I were to wish
On the wishiest star
Wish for a thing maybe near, maybe far
I’d wish for us all to see
The most beautiful thing about you and me.
It’s a word, one word, maybe you’ve heard
A word we say, and sing, and work toward
Here it goes,
1-2-3…
That wonderful word is:
Diversity.
Diversity, diversity! Can you say it too?
That’s the one! The word we look to.
Diversity, diversity, what does it mean?
The beautiful ways of all you and me.
Oh, where to start?
Oh, where to begin?
The shapes of eyes, the colors of skin
The families we have, the people we love,
The different ways we say the word “hug”
The foods that we eat, what we like for a treat,
All the many ways that we may greet
Maybe a wave, maybe a bow,
maybe a handshake or kiss on the brow
Isn’t it stupendous, splendid, superb
For us to be different, for us to observe
The things that make us say “hooray!”
The clothes that people wear each day
The things we use to move, move, move
Our favorite way to groove, groove, groove
Now what was that word?
That word that we heard?
Oh yes, it came to me,
The word was diversity!
If you think that’s pretty great,
Go on then and celebrate,
The wonderful ways that we can all be
People in this world differently.
