This piece has quite the origin story behind it. In 1827 Berlioz went to see Hamlet and was smitten by Harriet Smithson, an actress in the play. He wrote her many letters but never heard back before she left the city. This event inspired the piece. Symphonie Fantastique is a five movement thriller that walks you through many different scenes with many different emotions while following a recurring theme of despair and obsession that turns dark in the fifth movement where the character's beloved is cast into hell.
