Do you suspect your patient to have Cardiac Muscle Dysfunction: Cardiac Heart Failure (CHF) or Cardiomyopathies? Part of your assessment can include measuring calf girth. During right-sided heart failure, where the ventricle does not pump well, it can cause back up into the peripheral circulation, causing the lower extremities to swell up. Make sure you make this part of your assessment when working with a cardiac patient!
