In Germany, May Day Eve -- April 30 -- is called Walpurgis Night, when evil beings are abroad, and with them human worshippers who still guard the old pagan faith in secret.
This is very like the occasion of November Eve, which shared with May 1st Celtic manifestations of evil. Witches complete the list of supernatural beings which are out on Walpurgis Night.
Walpurgis Night is not a celebration; there are no festivals except those attended by witches. A person counts themselves wise who stays indoors that night.
