From Europe to Gulf: Kashi’s Zardozi craftsmen set benchmark

Varanasi’s Zardozi art, which ‘impressed’ French President Macron, shines globally. Known as the world's oldest city and a spiritual capital, Varanasi is celebrated for its craftsmanship, particularly in weaving and embroidery. In the narrow lanes of Varanasi’s Lallapura neighbourhood, skilled artisans create exquisite Zardozi embroidery, renowned worldwide. These craftsmen produce badges, emblems for foreign dignitaries, military, and religious figures, including the Pope and the Dalai Lama. Zardozi has been in high demand across the globe after it received Geographical Indication (GI) status in 2013. The artisans also take custom orders from fashion houses, using materials like Zari (gold and silver threads) and silk. During French President Emmanuel Macron's 2018 visit to Varanasi, PM Modi gifted him insignia crafted by Zardozi artists The craft, famous in Lallapura, involves a collaborative effort between communities, with increasing participation from women.
