The first wooden satellite, WISA Woodsat, was launched as an innovative project to test the viability of wood as a structural material in space. The satellite was developed by a Finnish company, Arctic Astronautics, in collaboration with several partners, including ESA (European Space Agency).

Material: The exterior panels were made from a special type of plywood called WISA-Birch, manufactured by UPM Plywood. This wood was specially treated for space conditions, including vacuum drying and a thin aluminum oxide coating.

To test the durability and behavior of wood in the harsh environment of space (exposure to vacuum, radiation, and temperature extremes).
