Hair Transplant Question:
What is the difference between FUE and FUT?

This is a common question we receive when patients want to talk about hair restoration.

Hair transplant involves removing and then placing the body’s own hair follicles from an area where there is enough hair (usually the sides and back of the head) and placing it where there is not enough hair (usually the frontal hairline, top of the head, but also the beard and eyebrows).

The hair follicles are implanted in the new area the same way with both techniques. However, they differ in how the hair follicles are removed.

FUT or the strip technique, involves surgical removal of a strip of tissue with hair from the back of the head. The area where the hair was removed is then closed with sutures and staples. It leaves a thin, fine line on the back of the scalp that is typically easily hidden if the hair is long enough. Each individual follicle is then removed from the strip of hair that was removed. These follicles are then implanted in the scalp where more hair is needed.

FUE involves individual removal of each follicle that will be transplanted. The hair is taken from the sides and back of the head. It does not involve a linear scar. The follicles are then implanted in the same manner as the FUT method.

Each procedure results in excellent results and patients love the procedure. It can dramatically change their life to once again have natural, normal hair again!
