Richard Beesley, Director of the Energy, Manufacturing & Infrastructure Practice (Interim Management).

Richard's role is to place interim managers in industrial settings. His role encompasses a wide range of sectors with different challenges at the moment: in energy, there is a need to look at a mix of energy provision, coming from a range of different sources. In manufacturing, much has previously been outsourced to China but increasingly there are worries about escalating costs there, and loss of intellectual property. The UK has always been strong on aerospace and defence, but budget cuts have reduced these sectors, and hi-tech manufacturing which is seen as a potential way to increase revenues and to invent a way out of global warming.

Construction is the first area to be hit hard in the economic downturn, but people are now seeing it as the area which could potentially help lift the UK out of recession. The transport sector is working on big projects and investments, which could be influential in this area, such as vast rail improvements in the UK.

In Richard's role at Veredus he is continuously scouting the best interim talent around -- both new and existing candidates. Sometimes he has placed people 3 or 4 times, as candidates keep returning to Veredus. He works closely with clients and candidates to get to know and understand the people and their culture --so he can place people well, not just matching skills, so they both get a good fit. Clients are increasingly looking for people who can lead a company through cost-cutting and right-sizing, new product development and turnaround work.

Interim managers tend to come from Board and Senior Management positions, who have experience in assessing problems, putting together plans and delivering improvements through the people. These roles require people who are agile, adept and inventive in the way they approach problems and who are at the top of their game.
