We don't have Bears Cougars Snakes or other nasty's in our bush! we got something better, way better! we got shafts vertical shafts that go all the way to the bottom..
Sometimes I just stand on them holes just like yesterday...
We found the tunnel through the hill and the old bridle path that lead down to the stamper. We followed bits of quartz and an overgrown track the others went on ahead as I looked and walked over the hole..Walked over the hole to look at the cliff face that had been worked, stepped back and missed the small hole that was open! just thought it was a shadow. Anyhow I'm standing on roots and can hear rocks falling wondered why the boys were throwing rocks into the stream; but it was rocks from beneath my feet making that splashy deadened sound..Looked down and all my years of Martial Art training came into action, I was looking down into a black hole of Maratoto right in front of my boots. Went straight up into the air while my stick (bo or Rakau) hit the rock face and pushed me back at a great rate. Landed on my feet well away. Woooooo if I was younger could have would have done a somersault! love days like this.
We found Payrock Lower level easily after that.
