Hi, everyone. Aiden here with eTrailer. Today we're gonna be taking a look at this Reese hitch mounted cargo carrier and we're gonna see how it fits on the back of our 2024 Jeep Grand Wagoneer L. Now, the Grand Wagoneer, especially the L, is an excellent family car. You've got those three rows of seats with plenty of cargo space, but even with all that space in the back, you might find yourself running out of it on long road trips, especially if all the passenger spaces are filled up. You need a place for everyone's luggage to go, and whether you're looking to just carry extra stuff out here, or maybe transfer some of the contents from inside to the outside so you're not blocking your back window, a cargo carrier is a great way to do that.
And this option from Reese is gonna be a really simple option because it's fixed and it comes with everything you need out of the box to get started, including that pin and clip, which a lot of cargo carriers don't. So if you're just looking for something simple, this can certainly get the job done, and it's gonna give you a ton of usable space with a 500 pound weight capacity while you're doing it. Now, one of the things I really like about this carrier is the fact that you can add on a light kit separately. Your Grand Wagoneer comes with wiring ready to go from the factory, just like your hitch. So it'd be a really easy upgrade to make, especially if you plan on stacking your stuff up really tall to the point where it maybe blocks your taillights a little bit.
It's just gonna transfer those lighting signals to the outer edge of the cargo carrier, making it much easier and safer to drive around at night by letting people know when you're switching lanes or hitting your brakes. But aside from that, there's a couple things you wanna keep in mind. Because it's fixed, it's not gonna be able to move when we say, want to access our cargo space, so I'll just stop the door right there, because you can only stack your cargo up about 14 inches high until that door is gonna start making contact with it as it opens. So, that kind of goes back to stacking things tall enough to block those lights. If you keep it under 13 or 14 inches, I think you're gonna be just fine.
Otherwise, you're not gonna be able to fully open up that hatch and access all the space on the inside. But because it's fixed, you do get a much more compact carrier. So from the bumper to the furthest point out here, it's only gonna be sticking out about 36 inches or three feet. That's still quite a bit, especially when you're pulling into parking spaces with an already really large vehicle, but it will be quite a bit shorter than other carriers that have a folding capability. And then your ground clearance at the back here, you're gonna be working with about 23 inches.
Bottoming out is not gonna be a concern for you. It's really more so for taking heavier items, say like a generator or a large cooler, and having to lift it up that much higher to get it into the carrier here. Now, your overall construction's gonna be steel. It's gonna be really strong and sturdy, but because it only comes with a standard pin and clip, it is going to have a little bit of rattle. So, if you're looking to make some upgrades in addition to that light kit, I would strongly recommend looking at an anti-rattle device because the more weight you have moving around back here, the more uncomfortable it would make me. And adding an anti-rattle, whether it's a pin or a collar, is gonna make this a lot more solid going down the road and fill me with a lot more confidence that my cargo is gonna be safe. But aside from that, I think it's gonna be a really good simple option, especially if you're not using it all the time. If you're only using it every once in a while and maybe you want to use it for trips to the hardware store where you just need to quickly throw it in the hitch and get going, this is gonna be a little bit lighter than some other carriers. A little bit easier to manage and just quicker to use overall. But again, my name's Aiden, and thanks for watching. Here it is in our test course. We'll start by going through the slalom. This is gonna show us the side to side action, which simulates turning corners or evasive maneuvers. Nex
