ANTARCTIC HURRICANE IN MAWSON STATION (ANTARCTICA)

An Antarctic Hurricane hit the Australian station Mawson on July 15 and 16, 2022. The second in less then 24 hours.
With sustained winds of up to 43.7 m/s (85 kt, 158 km/h, 98 mph)) the hurricane reached category AH-2 (winds between 43 m/s and 49 m/s) and remained over the region for 09 hours. This is the fifth Antarctic Hurricane to hit the Mawson station this year alone, on January 5th, February 25th, July 03th and July 14th we also recorded this type of extratropical cyclone which was able to reach winds equivalent to a tropical cyclone.

An extratropical cyclone will be classified as an Antarctic hurricane if it meets the following conditions:
a) Location: the extratropical cyclone must be located south of latitude 50ºS, that is, in the Southern Ocean or on the Antarctic coast/continent;
b) Low pressure center: must be 1000 hPa or less;
c) Winds: the cyclone must have sustained winds ≥ 33 m/s, ≥ 74 mph, ≥ 119 km/h or ≥ 64 kt. Wind gusts will not be considered.
d) The pressure drop in 24 hours must be at least 24 hPa, ie the cyclone must also be defined as an “Explosive Cyclone” according to Bergeron's rules. Source: WEC
