The Matterhorn is a mountain in the Alps, located on the border between Italy and Switzerland. It is a large, nearly symmetrical pyramidal peak in the Monte Rosa area of the Pennine Alps. The summit of the Matterhorn reaches 4,478 meters (14,692 feet) above sea level, making it one of the highest peaks in the Alps and Europe. The mountain has four steep faces, each facing a different direction—north, south, east, and west—divided by the Hörnli, Furggen, Leone (or Lion), and Zmutt ridges.

The Matterhorn overlooks the Swiss town of Zermatt in the canton of Valais to the northeast and the Italian town of Breuil-Cervinia in the Aosta Valley to the south. To the east of the Matterhorn lies Theodul Pass, a key passage between these two valleys, which has been an important trade route since the Roman Era.
