In The Northeastern Part Of United States, On The Southern Coast Of New York State, Lies The Long Island, The Largest Island In The Contiguous United States Of America. Covering Roughly 1,400 Square Miles In Total Surface Area, Long Island Is The 11th Largest Island In The U.S By Area, However, If We Consider Only The Contiguous United States, Not Including The Islands Of The State Of Alaska, The Big Island Of The State Of Hawaii And Puerto Rico, Long Island Is The Largest Island In The Contiguous United States.
Long Island Stretches For A Maximum Length Of Approximately 118 Miles From Its Westernmost Point In Brooklyn To Its Easternmost Point At Montauk Point. The Island's Width Varies From 12 To 23 Miles.

The Long Island Sound In The Northeast, Separates Long Island From Connecticut And Rhode Island, While The East River, Separates Long Island From Manhattan Island And From The Bronx, Situated On The Mainland. Moving South, The Upper New York Bay Separates Long Island And Manhattan From Jersey And Bayonne, While The Narrows Separates Long Island From Staten Island. The Lower Newyork Bay Separates Long Island, And Staten Island Of New York State From The State Of New Jersey.

Long Island Comprises Of Four Counties, Which Are Queens And Kings Counties In The Western Portion Of The Island, East Of Them Are Nassau And Suffolk Counties. These Counties Are Divided Into Two Distinct Sections, The New York City Boroughs And The Suburban Counties. Brooklyn And Queens Are Governed As Boroughs Of New York City, While Nassau And Suffolk Have Their Own County Governments. Brooklyn And Queens Are More Urbanized And Densely Populated As Compared To Nassau And Suffolk, Which Are Primarily Suburban And Rural, With Low Population Density And More Open Spaces.

While Brooklyn And Queens Are Geographically Situated On Long Island, The Term "Long Island" In Everyday Conversation Among New Yorkers Usually Refers Specifically To Nassau And Suffolk Counties, As Brooklyn And Queens Are Heavily Urbanized And Are Considered Integral Parts Of New York City. Nassau And Suffolk Counties, On The Other Hand, Are Primarily Suburban And Rural, With A Different Lifestyle And Pace. Brooklyn And Queens Were Incorporated Into New York City In The Late 19th Century, While The Rest Of Long Island, However, Remained Separate, Developing Its Own Identity.

Long Island Has A Total Population Of Roughly 8 Million Inhabitants, This Makes It The Most Populated Island In The United States. It Constitutes Roughly 40% Of New York State's Entire Population, Making It One Of The Most Densely Populated Regions In The United States. Long Island Is The Third-most Populous Island In The Americas After Hispaniola And Cuba, The Island Is More Populated Than Ireland. If Long Island Was A U.s. State, It Would Rank As The 13th-most Populous State And First In Population Density.
