LEADIN:

The world’s greatest collection of British art has been rehung at London’s Tate Britain museum.

The new layout attempts to link contemporary pieces with portraits painted centuries ago.

STORYLINE:

Tate Britain’s galleries have had a bit of a makeover.

For the first time in 10 years, the museum has rehung its permanent collection.

Paintings and sculptures spanning six centuries are on display.

There are portraits of 17th century noblemen and women alongside sculptures of suitcases that are a comment on modern day migrants.

In the Salon Room, the walls have been covered from top to bottom with artworks, an echo of the first public art exhibitions staged centuries ago.

"Well what we've done is we've rehang the entire collection displays at Tate Britain, which is across 40 rooms, for the first time in ten years to offer, in a way, a whole new way of looking at British art history," says Alex Farquharson, Director of Tate Britain.

The galleries walls have been repainted, different colours to represent different periods of art history.
