In 1974, the efforts of an anime producer named Yoshinobu Nishizaki aired on Japanese television...ultimately unsuccessfully. Daring to take on the formidable opponent found in the animation juggernaut, "Heidi, Girls of the Alps," the underdog anime, "Space Battleship Yamato" (later localized in the USA as, "Star Blazers,") failed to captivate audiences before having its originally planned episode count roughly halved.

But slowly, over the years in reruns, SBY rose from the very spot it sunk initially, much like retrofitted Yamato in the show. Nishizaki knew that he had to seize the opportunity in theatres. The first SBY movie was released in 1977.

And this was all attributable in no small part to the recruitment of Leiji Matsumoto as a director. While his role is difficult to define, it's unquestionable that he reworked a story that wasn't working into one of Japan's most formative works of anime, space opera, and storytelling.
So how has it held up? What about the reboots? Does SBY really deserve to be Matsumoto's most notable work in Japan? Or is there something about the show and its original creator that make that fact a harder pill to swallow?
